NagaRi KaNduChhi

The City is CRYING

I have composed nearly 70 poems on Hyderabad, the city where I have been since 1984. In many poems of the last three volumes, the imprint of my village in Odisha is seen heavily. Being reminded by Anjali, my wife I decided to write on Hyderabad. Most of these poems carry the words of a migrant that has moved to city from rural India. And also talks of the agony of a city due to indiscriminate expansion, that has been there now for many cities (like Hyderabad) in India

This poem, talks of the present of a city due to heavy expansion at the cost of greenery, erosion of culture and livelihood of people those who are living in villages around the city. The wide 6-lane ring roads are the pythons who spit fire and smoke everyday making the the city environment poisonous. Everyday, water table shrinks down by an inch. It aspires for judicious expansion taking care of greens and interest of poor.

The poem is published in SAGARIKA - Odia literary magazine, May 2011

I have read this poem before and pointed out the symbolic python used for road is completely new in Odia literature.

Btw, it's Asaraphi.

Growing India Cities gradually becoming of not-mine places without its inherent culture. Probably, these are passing through a phase of transition. This is the right time to build ethos of Indian cities. Now, people consider it just as a place for making money; that to as early as possible. Urbanisation is the order of the day now. A great number of people will settle down in urban areas. These places has to be humanistic more.

Sir the above poem is very beautiful. I respect heartily your art of presenting the visible yet ignored problems through your writing beautifully well. In the poem as before you are much concerned about the environment degradation... the "ajagara" as mentioned by you as the ring road is a appropriate simile...due to rising vehicles additional roads are constructed and that in turn like a savage cobra gobbles down the greenery and habitations.... And in the last paragraph it has been mentioned that there is a possibility in getting back the lost beauty and peace through massive plantations.. So I like this poem very much..:)

The poem is very good giving the real picture of a "crying city". Hope this will be the theme of your fourth anthology.
Best wishes for the new book.
