SILENCE

Silence brings out beauty of life. One when engaged in self-search,
turns silent for rest of the world. That's why a silent person is
revered. Do you count me stereotype? You are right on your own rights!

I remember, how threatening is silence in childhood schooldays when
I heard, 'pin-drop silence'. For a post-colonial churned out like me,
being inclusive- for many of us, anything told in English, turns so important.
So, also silence! And for that many of us including me are praised
- 'what a nice guy! Look at him how cool sitting without even a
slice of sound.' Actually, I was silent that time and now even like many,
for not being engaged in bigger truth in life, (if exists than market)
but for simple scare. Well, I'm not alone. There are many like me.

In times of 'Mahabharata', it's disturbing to understand why Vishma Pitamaha'
was silent in 'Kurusava' the court Kuru King Duryoadhana at the time when Draupadi
was going through Talibanic treatment in full public -the court itself.
Unfortunately or fortunately or coincidentally there were no such media
as we have today. Well, if you are too much market oriented like we do
with cricket having IPL etc. you can think of a reality show on
'Kurusava'.

I was making this proposal while sipping tea over a lengthy afternoon on
a holiday. This I always prefer adopting new habitat leaving my village
where the time was at my side for chatting, atleast that time; though many
point out that village has already changed. I reluctantly agree as I don't
find so when I visit my village for getting ample of simpletons around me to
chat and chat and chat.

Anyway, the act of chatting in market economy is never social as I'm used to.
Any chat, without return is waste. So, for chatting I bring out topic that
atleast hypothetically promise returns. Coming back, I proposed a reality
show on 'Kuru Sava' emphasizing heavy return on each episodes of reality show.
Good thing, there will not be many dialogue as SILENCE is the reality there.

Somebody, rudely shook me telling - it was old rotten idea. In reality,
there is pervading SILENCE that leads stealthily, particularly this is
for the land of Rishis- India.
Here, you keep SILENT till being bitten wholly by termites and then you
write an EPIC. Don't you see being written off-and-on now?

I looked forward to another - as we only chat and chat.

Sir,
In your article you have silently revealed the essence of silence. Yes we are used to this word SILENCE in English. The moment this word comes before me I remember the big board on the library projecting this SILENCE. I remember in the old days the cinema halls putting this slide of a baby having its forefinger on its lips depicting SILENCE. I remember my school days when on absent of a teacher, another older teacher not connecting to the subject use to come as substitute and ask all of us to remain SILENCE by keeping our forefinger on our lips. This session of SILENCE used to be enjoyable because during this time we use to hear the noise of giggles, coughs, hush etc. These in turn use to make us control our laugh. And when for a brief period the teacher went out of the class to meet another, we all use to laugh noisily till the teacher coming back to class and shouted SILENCE.

It is said that speech is silver and SILENCE is gold. There were innumerable experiences to me where I felt that SILENCE would have been gold rather than speaking silver.
I feel that SILENCE gives a person more strength. Here SILENCE means being peaceful. That is why Yoga, Meditation all advocate SILENCE. One can think calmly and take proper decisions in SILENCE. Speaking less and only to the point is equal to SILENCE and it benefits when practiced.
It is often told that a silent person cannot be trusted. Here the silent does not mean the SILENCE that we are referring to. Our SILENCE is to do with calmness, tolerance and peaceful.
Generally we love SILENCE after returning from the very noisy outside world. Thank God our colony still has that SILENCE. I personally like SILENCE.
BUT there are times when the silence can kill you. I mean, when your family is away and when you return to an empty house, you feel the silence killing you. I said killing because this is the time when you hear the noise of your wife and children echoing from the walls silently. You will be longing to have them back. And also this is the time you will recollect all the mistakes that you have done to your family, that is, raising your voice at your wife (when it was not required), scolding the children (when it was absolutely not required). Then you promise within you not to repeat that again in future. Now the SILENCE has paid you back the lesson to practice peace and act peacefully.
During Wimbledon Tennis matches we can hear the match referee calling to the public SELENCE please. Here, the SILENCE is the discipline.
As you have mentioned, Sir, SILENCE is beautiful. And yes we tend to praise children who are silent and obeying. Your imagination of the reality show on ‘kurusava’ with no dialogues as the subject is SILENCE is humorous. And then you exit from your imagination and find the truth that we are on the land of rishis and munis that practiced the powerful mantra SILENCE.

Sir,

It is very true that in the present society there is so much unwanted silence. So many women are being brutally harassed but still we are all silent. I think this silence comes because of fear and inability. The silence in the court of kurusava is because there was not a hero who was bold enough to talk or stop that heinous act.

Even now a days we see terrible things in our news papers. Once i read of a girl raped by seventeen men, and to make it worse, video taped and blackmailed. The society is still silent. I think this is all because of several reasons. Firstly, we don't care because it did not happen to us. Secondly we are too afraid to come into public and boldly fight. Thirdly, the lack of faith that we are going to make any difference. Fourth, what a single person can do? It is a collective task. Fifth, we are not lawmakers or kings. Sixth, we have other priorities.

Enjoyed reading the piece on silence. Silence is definitely a sign of spirituality. But it could be silence of 'inaction' when action is needed as in 2G scam. Some people are silent because they think that is the "golden means", that is, to enjoy power but do nothing. So one can be good but "for nothing" like Bhisma Pitamaha.

Corruption, like god, is omnipotent in India and operationally on top,' the former judge observed. 'Indian corruption is above god, above cricket, above Commonwealth Games. It is in every institution and office,' he said.

'Every Indian, including those in the central and state governments, is marketable and sells his dignity to dollar and MNCs,' he alleged.

'By silence and inaction, several others compromise on dignity. Inaction is not innocence. But action is an obligation,' he said.

Too much to do, to do anything
Too much to say, to say anything
Too much to hear, to hear anything
Too much to think, to think of any solution
Too much to be scared of, to attempt anything
Too much to hide, to go out in the open
Too easy to avoid, to have to come to terms....
