Sher Ali Khan the revolutionary was hanged here in Viper Island in Andaman for killing Lord Mayo, the Governor General of India on 08 February 1872 at Hope Town Jetty (now called Panighat). Lord Mayo was on his way to Cuttack from Kolkatta via Andaman Islands.
